SOLD

Offered is an interesting American coin silver teaspoon with a very rare mark variant for well-known Philadelphia silversmith James Peters; this is the only example of this mark I've observed. It's uncommon enough that no example was found for Catherine Hollan's book, despite many other Peters marks having been found. Perhaps this was a die that broke shortly after being introduced, or one not normally used on flatware. This teaspoon is engraved "MAW" in period script and has a legible maker's mark. It measures about 6 1/8 inches and weighs about 15 grams. Condition is fair at best, with some obvious corrosion on both sides of the handle, and various dings or bends to the spoon but no splits or repairs. In this case, rarity outweighs condition. All in all a fine example of this rare maker's mark!
