Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
Good Decorated Newburyport, MA Coffin-End Spoon by Joseph Moulton III
SOLD
Offered is a delicate and nicely decorated early 19th Century American coin silver teaspoon by Newburyport, Massachusetts silversmith Joseph Moulton III (1744-1816); the maker's mark on this spoon is Mark (a) in the book "Simple Elegance - Generations of Newburyport Silversmiths". This piece should date to about 1800-1805, give or take a couple of years. This spoon is engraved with period block initials of "EB".
This spoon measures about 5 1/16 inches in length and weighs about 7 grams. It is in good condition overall, with minor tip wear and a few small dings to the upper handle, but no splits or repairs. The wriggle-worked heel and roulette or wriggle-worked decoration to the front are emblematic of Joseph Moulton III's work during this period. All in all a nice example!
