Though admittedly my memory is not what it used to be, I can't recall ever having owned an item in this pattern. It is a wonderful naturalistic form which Krider executed with the highest quality. We believe that the original cat tail and butterfly model was executed in clay, cut to create the flat side, then folded over (see arrow in fou...

Notable as birthplace of Brigham Young, the town was a mere thirty years old when these spoons were made. We marvel a bit that such a small, rural spot could support its own silversmith, and can't help but suspect that he dabbled in other trades.

Edward Holland Hastings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on February 1, 1857.   This dramatic christening cup from the gentleman whom we presume to be his uncle, Edward M. Holland, presaged a distinguished career as owner and impresario.

After spending a year at Cambridge High School, he prepared for four years at Philip Academy in Exeter, NH.   Immensely popular with his schoolmates, he was elected class president  and entered Harvard upon graduation.   Illness prevented him from...

Some similarities such as the ring-matte chasing (see second photo) exist between this and China Trade items which were imported to Boston during an albeit slightly later time frame, (see Forbes, figures 41 and 153), which along with the four toed feet and overall chunky-ness of this item leads me to wonder if Messr's Welles a...

marked only "sterling 4," (see fourth enlargement) these are probably Whiting or Gorham, circa 1868. Pleasantly heavy in the hand, they are of exceptional quality and workmanship. Each arm comprises a grapevine (complete with added "age" marks!) with two applied grape leaves and a dangling cluster of grapes. A splendid example of Victoriana, and similar in theme to cheese scoops with figural mice, as their form defines their function.

Let's face it: after months and months of enduring the pandemic, you're probably ready for a drink and perhaps two. Might as well do it in style with this high quality antique julep cup.

Though other (albeit some slightly cheaper; some not) examples by Mr. Hudson have come on the market, none that I've seen have --at just shy of six (5.94) Troy ounces --been so heavy and well constructed. A few very minor dings but fine overall condition and monogrammed in period script as shown.
