Boston circa 1800, length 5 1/4 inches, weight .47 oz Troy, excellent condition, period script mono "MH", marked as shown in 3rd enlargement.

While it may be difficult to work up too much excitement over a mustard ladle, this one is especially long and well-constructed, with a shaft that chamfers as it meets the perfectly hemispherical bowl, and an ever so stylish gently tip't drop.

Newburyport, MA circa 1800, length 5 5/8 inches, weight 1.97 Troy ounces, unusual "sickle and sheaf" drops, fine condition, marked and monogrammed as shown in enlargements.

According to Flynt & Fales, Dole was an exceptionally meticulous spoon maker who was "known to be very exact in his habits, so much so that people set their clocks by his movements about town."

maker "AM", height 5 1/4 inches, weight 16.95 Troy ounces, one bobeche is slightly out of round (see fifth enlargement) but excellent overall condition, engraved "A. Arnaud."

French Sculptor Auguste Arnaud is noted for his work "The Skirmisher," now housed at the Redoute de Gravelle in Paris. He sought but failed to win a commission for the official state sculpture of Don Pedro II, King of Portugal. Most probably these were his personal candlesticks, purchased during his time in Portugal...

round downturned ends with short back midrib decoration and raised arch drops, length 8 3/4 inches, weight 4.14 Troy ounces the pair, some very light wear to engraving but fine overall condition, marked as shown in fifth enlargement with Vernon's distinctive pseudo-hallmarks.

Collecting early American silver does not have to be an overly expensive proposition, although you could also find similar spoons on ebay (item 274673082801) @195.00 each!

For whatever reason, items in this pattern do not tend to wear well. This one is in exemplary condition.

NY circa 1790, bright cut borders with oval cartouche, elongated bowls with raised oval drops, length 8 3/4 inches, weight 3.13 Troy ounces the pair, marked and monogrammed as shown in enlargements. There is some softening to the decoration, but the bowls are largely free of tip wear and both spoons are in very good overall condition.

For Victorian era bookmark collectors, I daresay that this is the sine qua non.

Though the gilding was probably a bit brighter in 1902, this is still an especially impressive example. For those of you who are not familiar with weights, 5.9 Troy ounces will feel wonderfully heavy in the hand!

2 inches in diameter, 1 7/8 in height, weight 2.04 Troy ounces, immaculate original condition, richly engraved and repousse chased with Hindu deities and scroll work in high relief, monogrammed "C" as shown, unmarked.

When it comes to condition, what separates the men from the boys, or the women from the girls (Don Soeffing describes the figure as "somewhat androgynous," so let's honor that!) is the clarity of the ivy garland. We suspect that not many of these spoons were produced, and many of those that survive are looking tired and worn. These will do your collection proud, and also enable you to take a very generous mouthful of soup!

This large (2 1/2 inch diameter; weight 31.7grams), early brooch is not pictured in Drucker, nor is it listed anywhere else which we can find on this World Wide Web. The reverse is marked and engraved as shown in our third enlargement. There are some minor scratches on the reverse, but the part that meets your eye is in excellent condition.
