This stoneware pitcher has a pleasingly simple shape and warm, earthy relief stripes. It was hand-thrown by Oregon potter Bennett Welsh in the '70s and is signed B Welsh. Pacific stoneware '71. It has a satiny surface and a really nice heft in the hand. It has a nice coastal scene with seagulls in relief. Measures just over 5" tall. Perfect condition.
Among the first Northwest potters to experiment with high-fired stoneware, Bennett Welsh was the founding ceramics instructor at the Portland Museum School (now called Pacific Northwest College of Art). He owned Pacific Stoneware, a production ceramics company that made wheel thrown pieces that are now collectibles in their own right.
