A striking union of sterling silver with clear glass, this 6 1/2" high syrup jug is one item of a line of hollowware produced by Durgin.  Other forms in this late 19th to early 20th century series include a cream and sugar pair, a vase, a sugar shaker, and possibly more.

Common to all these pieces are silver bases, crowns, and the truly defining element, which is a dolphin or sea serpent handle.

The bodies are high quality, finely cut rock crystal.  At least one source attributes the glass to Hawkes.  The fineness of the glass stands on its own, and in this regard the maker is almost irrelevant as it had to be a premier producer.

A repeating theme on the cast silver is a double leaf form that adorns the foot of the pedestal base, around both its lower edge and on the fan-like support that cradles the bottom of the glass.  The collar around the top of the body also repeats this same design.

The neck is tall, 1 3/8" at the highest, has an upswept lip, a helmet shaped lid, and a solid thumb grip.

There is a raised flower, leaf, and vine design under the lip, and a reserve that is monogrammed "EH" in script.

The handle has a leafy detail on the lower edge that reaches clear to the silver on the base.  The figure has a scaly body, and a head with an open mouth that joins with the attachment to the neck, which, consistent with the rest of the overall motif, shows an embossed leaf.

The underside is stamped with the Durgin emblem used on hollowware, "3," "Sterling," and "Spaulding & Co. 925 1000" for the prominent Chicago firm with a branch in Paris.

This is in superb condition.  It sits evenly and the lid, which retains its original hinge and pin, fits snugly, with just a bit of sideways play. The lid has one almost imperceptible dimple.  The silver is free of polishing wear and retains sharp detail to the design.  The glass is clear and without cracks or nicks.
