Relatively large, this inkwell stands 4 1/8" high and has a base diameter of 2 3/4". The body is brilliant period cut glass with a 1/2" wide silver band around the bottom, and with a silver collar and spherical cap.

It is model number "S623," as stamped below the hinge, along with "Sterling." Gorham's "lion, anchor, G" hallmark appears on the underside of cap, as well as "Sterling" and a date symbol for "1890." All these marks repeat on the lower rim, save the date symbol there is for 1889.

The silver work is a "Repousse" design that features blossoms and leaves. The work on the lid is hand chased, and particularly elaborate, while the lower band appears to be die rolled.

The glass is very high quality with a clear brilliance. The pattern is a swirl with diamond cuts along the ridges.

There is a separate, original, glass insert that serves as the actual receptacle for the ink.

It is in excellent condition. The glass remains bright and clear, and is without chips or cracks. The silver retains good pattern definition, showing only light softening of detail from polishing. The hinge is secure, with a small bit of side play, and has its original pin.
