Stamped "N. Harding & Co.," for the Boston manufacturer and jeweler, as well as "Sterling" and "2," on the blade, this 7 1/4" long, weighty at 1.2 T. oz., master butter knife was made by Whiting.

The pattern is "Lotus," which is an Egyptian Revival design that is nearly identical to Gorham's pattern of the same name, save Whiting's version shows five fronds while Gorham's has three.

It is solid silver, with a flat handle joined to an upswept blade with a scalloped top edge.

Never monogrammed, it is in excellent estate condition. Pattern detail remains well-defined and the finish has an even patina. The blade remains flat and free of bends, nicks, or burrs, showing only light surface scratches consistent with age.
