A 7 5/8" long, 1.2 T. oz., piece, this example of Whiting's "Arabesque" pattern, is imprinted with the company's "lion" logo and the number "19" on the backside heel of the bowl, and "Sterling" and "Pat. 1875" on the handle reverse.

The griffin set against a Moorish style background composition is emblematic of the Renaissance Revival period of the 1870s.

The bowl is plum shaped, with a flange rim and central vee running from the handle to the midpoint of the base. It is finished with a satin matte gold wash, front and back sides.

It is without a monogram or removal, and in superb estate condition. The pattern retains virtually all of its detail, showing only a slight polishing effect on the highest points of the feathered chest of the griffin. The bowl is free of dents, nicks, or burrs, and retains of its gold wash. The overall finish is bright and even.
