The quality of design and execution evident in this 7 1/2" tall, weighty at 6.8 T. oz., solid silver muffineer aka sugar shaker or castor bespeaks the reputation of its maker and the jeweler who retailed it.
Redlich & Co., whose "lion" emblem appears on the underside, traces to George Shiebler through one of its two cofounders, Adolph Ludwig, who was a designer with the latter firm.
Grogan & Co., also imprinted on the underside, was a carriage trade Pittsburgh jeweler, with it and Redlich sharing overlapping dates, about 1890-1930.
Other marks include "Sterling" and model number "C9095A."
Georgian in style overall, the foot and lower section of the body are chased in a scroll and floral design. The main part of the body is channeled like a column, with the surface of the grooves subtly hammered. Added finish, this is perhaps also a nod to the popularity of the Arts & Crafts movement of the period.
The collar around body top has a gadroon rim, while the lofty, pierced, sleeve fitted, lid is chased in a daisy flower and cross-hatched design.
Never monogrammed or inscribed, this is in excellent condition. It if free of dents, bends, or scratches and has a bright finish. The lid fits snugly and is without breaks or tears.
