Lengthy at 8 3/4" and weighty at nearly 2.7 T. oz., this entirely original cheese scoop has New York City origins.
The pattern is "Tuscan," which is an "Olive" variant that was originated in 1846 by Michael Gibney and later marketed by Whiting.
This is an early example of the line, dating from the 1860s and retailed by the prominent firm of "Ball, Black & Co.," whose name, along with "950" for an enhanced silver standard higher than sterling, is imprinted on the handle backside.
The scoop itself is robust and spade shaped. It has a rounded tip, raised edges, and a flat heel.
Without a monogram (although there may have been a removal on the handle backside), it is in superb condition. It retains clear detail, is free of bends, nicks, or burrs, and has a bright finish. The only signs of use are some light surface scratches on the scoop.
