Measuring 6" across and weighing a substantial 4.5 T. oz., this solid silver, raised rim, dish or plate was made by Whiting, whose "winged lion and W" emblem, the word "Sterling," and model number "1" are imprinted on the underside, along with an inscribed block letter "B."

Likely a baptism or birth presentation piece, it is engraved on the interior surface, "Lee Florence O'Niel, from his godfather, W.J. Florence, 1873," all in a variety of period fonts with embellishments.

The 3/4" wide rim is inscribed with a repeating grassy motif, the style of which appears to be influenced by the Aesthetic taste of the period. This design is set against a knurled background.

The top surface is finished in an overall gold wash.

In excellent condition, this is free of dents, bends, or scratches, and the engraving remains crisp, suffering no polishing wear. The gold shows some rubbing wear; otherwise the finish is even and satisfying.
