A legendary flatware line produced by Gorham that was based on classical mythological imagery, a Skinner's auction catalogue entry notes of it, "Mythologique may be [designer Antoine] Heller’s most celebrated pattern, and featured not only single characters, but entire figural scenes."

The same entry further adds, "The Luxembourg Museum in Paris acquired their own Mythologique service for their collection in 1896."

Elizabeth Williams, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum offers an extensive and fact filled essay available online about the pattern.

In short, this design issued in 1895, remains commanding today and still evokes admiration and commentary, as the above citations exemplify.

This example is an original, old (not the later reissue) 7 1/4" long, heavy at 2.0 T. oz., place aka regular or lunch, size fork.

The specific motif portrayed on the handle is "Chiron and Achilles." In Greek mythology, Chiron was a wise Centaur who instructed numerous heroes, including his grandson Achilles.

"Mythologique" was offered in two versions. This is the more elaborated and sought after one, with a beaded handle backside and a face on the heel.

The handle reverse is also inscribed with a flowing script monogram that appears to be "ERB."

In very good condition, this shows minimal wear. The design is low relief and subject to softening from polishing and this evidences only a slight bit of that. The tines are straight, even, pointed, and without bends or scuffs. The finish shows a warm patina.

Marks are Gorham's "lion, anchor, G," emblem and "Sterling" set on the handle backside, and "Copyrighted '95" on the handle edge.
