While the length of a sugar spoon at 5 7/8", this .7 T. oz., coin silver item was no doubt intended for jam or preserves. Victorian custom often employed purpose-related decorative detail on the serving portion of pieces, and given the strawberry fruit, leaves and stem engraved in the ovoid, gold washed bowl of this, the intended function appears self-evident.

The rounded, slightly downturned handle has a tiered end and a front surface that is diamond cut in an intricate design. The overall style is typical of mid 19th century Boston silver design.

Marked "Guerney Bro's." on the otherwise plain backside for the Brockton, Massachusetts, retailer, this was likely made by Farrington & Hunnewell or possibly Durgin.

It has a fancy, inscribed Old English "K" or "R" monogram on the handle front.

In superb estate condition, the bright cutting remains crisp and sharp, the finish is bright, and there are no dents, bends, or mars. The only sign of use is slight loss of the gold finish on the bowl.
