A specialized item that evolved in France about 200 years ago, wine tasters followed after a standardized form as manifest in this example.

It is a 2 1/2" diameter by 7/8" high small bowl with a loop handle with a thumb grip.

Marked with a first standard "minerva head" emblem on the handle and secondly on the interior of the bowl, this is 950 silver, slightly higher than sterling at 925.

With a likely 19th century date, the inside of the handle is also stamped with a bigorne, i.e. silver content confirmation, and a maker's mark which is challenging to read.

Again following conventional form, the interior has a raised hemispheric base and swirled and dotted sides. This along with the natural reflectiveness of the silver, served the sommelier when evaluating a wine.

These were often fitted with a chain so they could be carried around the neck.

In outstanding condition, this is without dents, bends, polishing wear or damage. There is a slight crease on the thumb grip and this is the only sign of use.
