Illustrative of the popularity of the poppy motif in Art Nouveau silver design, Gorham's Patrician and Poppy were both issued in 1902, followed in 1904 by Virginiana, with all three patterns featuring this motif.

Patrician and Poppy in particular seem little distinguished from one another, save apropos of its name, Patrician incorporates high, rather "proud," shoulders and acanthus leaf detailing on the middle and lower areas of the handle front and backside, lending it an overall regal character that is not generally evidenced in Art Nouveau design and earning it is name.

This example is a youth spoon. As the form tends to be, at 6 1/8" and weighty at just over 1.1 T. oz. (35 grams), this is slightly longer and more substantial than a teaspoon and has a larger bowl.

In outstanding estate condition, and never monogrammed, this is without wear, retains clear pattern detail, and has a bright finish.

Marks are Gorham's "lion, anchor, G" emblem, "Sterling," and "Patent 1902."
