A noted 19th century Philadelphia silver manufacturer, William Faber, later joined by his sons, produced items of high quality and lasting appeal as evidenced in this solid silver 7 1/2" long, 1.1 T. oz., master butter knife.

Dating circa 1870, the handle is of a form that Faber favored. It has a curved surface handle with a gently pointed tip and scalloped sides. This is bright cut and wriggle work engraved in a period, toward a Greek Revival style, design that incorporates a leaf and flower, perhaps lily of the valley, theme.

It is also inscribed "M. Wood" in Old English lettering set sideways on the front.

The blade is broad and has a pointed tip and sharply scalloped upper edge. It is engraved in a manner that is compatible with the design on the handle.

The backside is plain save for the marks which are "Sterling" and "W. Faber US Sons."

In exceptionally fine condition, this is free of polishing wear, bends or damage, and has a brilliant finish.
