Philadelphia in origin, this 6 5/8" long, approximately .8 T. oz., piece is stamped "Bailey & Co." (later Bailey, Banks & Biddle), along with a "lion, S, shield, lion" hallmark and a "star" (which is likely a journeyman's mark).

Bailey used "S" in its hallmark for sterling, and "U" for coin silver, so this is assumedly sterling.

The hallmark is also associated with George Sharp who worked as Bailey's manufacturing manager, 1852-c62 (Catherine B. Hollan, Philadelphia Silversmiths).

A preserve or jelly spoon, it has a Tipt end handle, a 2 1/4" by 1 1/2" shell bowl with high, pointed and beveled, shoulders at the join with the handle.

There is a handsome, period, feathered script "CV" monogram engraved on the handle front.

In very fine condition, apart from surface scratches consistent with age, this is absent evidence of use and shows a warm finish. The bowl is without dents, bends, or tears.
