Manufacturers often produced individual examples of regular flatware lines to a higher standard as showcase pieces and that describes this pair of coffee spoons in Durgin's 1890 Shell, which features a raised version of this motif on the handle end.

Measuring 4 3/8" long (slightly longer than a demitasse), they weigh a substantial 1.1 T. combined.

The weight is their first distinguishing characteristic, and that shows in the extra width of the shanks and thickness of the bowls. The bowls have gold finished surfaces front and back sides, which is additional an enhancement.

The clarity of the strikes and brilliance of the finishes are exceptionally fine and those are capstone qualities to this exceptional pair.

Each one is engraved in a fine, precise, line script "LMW" monogram.

As the above indicates, these remain in flawless, essentially original, condition.

They are marked with Durgin's early "bird in an oval" emblem, "Sterling," and the name of the retailer, "Theodore B. Starr," New York, first quarter 20th century.
