An prominent name among contemporary British metal workers, Michael Allen Bolton (1938-2005) produced signature jewelry, flatware, and small items in silver.

There is ample biographical information about him available online, along with illustrations of his products.

One UK source notes these details,

"He exhibited successfully at the Goldsmith's Company 'Loot' exhibitions from 1975 to 1981 and in their 'Contemporary Silver Tableware' exhibition in 1996. In that catalogue it stated 'His work in silver and gold is inspired by the magic and aura of Celtic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon metalwork, the romanticism of the King Arthur legends, and the ethics and ideology of the late 19th and 20th century British Arts and Crafts movement.'"

This same reference observes, "His hammered approach to the silver material accentuates the malleability of its surface, creating a finish that is unique to him."

These very qualities are fully evident on this 6 3/8" long, nearly 1.1 T. oz., spoon hallmarked in the bowl with his "MEB" maker's stamp, along with a "leopard head," a "lion passant," and date letter "i" for 1983.

It has a slender, squared, slightly upturned handle with two applied balls and three cross grooves at the point where it attaches to the bowl. There is a rattail extension on the bowl backside.

The handle and bowl both have hammered surfaces that are strongly naturalistic in feel, as if formed from ancient, primal, material.

All facets of the piece appear to be chiseled and show a variety of finishes, with some areas reflecting a fine, glistening, sheen, with other areas speckled as if eroded. There are even incidental, light cross scratches and apparent slight nicks.

While the work on this at first appears unintentional or accidental, deeper contemplation suggests that every gesture that went into its making was considered and precise and that is a reflection of the inspired genius embodied in the piece.

In fully original condition, there is no wear or damage and the finish is flawless.
