Impressive on multiple counts, the most immediate feature of this chalice or goblet is its commanding size.

It stands 8 1/8" tall, has a top diameter of 3 7/8", sits on a 4" wide foot, and weighs 12.7 T. oz.

Made by Gorham, it is stamped on the underside with the company's "lion, anchor, G" emblem, "Sterling," model number "935," and date letter "O" for 1882.

A presentation piece, it is a study in decorative embellishment.

The upper edge of the body is encircled by a die rolled band of repeating shields or seals that incorporate Greek key and trefoil elements in their design.

The wall is engraved on one side with the words, Warner Prize, Awarded to, S. Halsted Watkins, Union College, 1882 enclosed in a diamond. This is surrounded by extensive bright cut leaf and diamond detailing, along with stippling and wriggle work.

The opposite side of the body shows a matte finish block that is inscribed, Excellens in Virtute et Scientia, Obtinuit, also surrounded by extensive and intricate bright cut engraving, with wriggle work and stippling.

The underside of the foot is etched with the words, "Horatio Gates Warner, Constituit 1859." and "Sanders" Schdy.

The flared foot has a multi-rimmed bottom edge but is otherwise plain.

In superb condition, this is very well preserved, absent polishing wear, dents, bends, or other damage. The interior of the bowl has a soft satin finish and does shows two areas where there are vertical scratches. The exterior finish is smooth and bright.
