Dating circa 1840, this 6 1/2" long, .7 T. oz., Tipt aka Fiddle Tipt spoon is stamped "F. Franks & Co." and "Dollars."

Lacking a certain attribution, Catherine Hollan in her Philadelphia Silversmiths writes, "The firm is unidentified, probably from New Hampshire or New England where "DOLLAR[S]" is used [although this term, designating a coin silver standard, is not exclusive to New England]."

She further notes, however, that Yale University Art Gallery has spoons [with identical marks to those on this] that they attribute to Philadelphia," leaving the final location of the maker in question.

The matter of geography is further confounded by the fact that this is engraved "A.A. Schuyler" in large, feathered script, lettering set sideways on the handle front. This name suggests a Hudson River Valley association, midway between New England and Philadelphia.

Whatever its origin, it is a well-made and appealing period piece with a rare mark.

The handle is long and wide compared to the size, 1 3/4" x 1 1/2", of the shell-form bowl, leaving it as possibly for sugar or jelly.

In very good condition, it shows no signs of use apart from light surface scratches consistent with age. It is without bends, dents, cracks, or repairs. The surface has a soft patina.
