This large, 9 1/8" long, just over 3.0 T. oz. (95 grams), berry scoop or shovel (sometimes identified as a cracker scoop) is a mid 19th century item with Philadelphia provenance. It is marked "J.E. Caldwell & Co." for the renowned manufacturer turned jeweler from that city.

Other marks include "coin" for the silver standard, and very small cartouche with the letters "ET," for which there is not an immediate explanation.

The form is very much of its period and place. The handle has a twisted shank joined to a flat, shaped, end with an engine turned and bright cut surface.

The design includes a shield reserve which in this instance is inscribed with an "L.M.C." monogram in Old English lettering.

The handle backside is plain save for the marks.

The large, 3 3/4" by 2 1/2", scoop is shell-like, with scalloped shoulders, a ribbed interior, and is finished in a bright gold wash on the inside.

In choice estate condition, this is essentially without wear, nor does it have any damage. The detail remains crisp, the bowl is free of dents or bends, and the finish is bright and even.
