Hammered surfaces were often a mark of hand worked Arts & Crafts period silver work, and this piece is a study in that feature.

A relatively large, 7" tall, 5.17 T. oz., solid silver muffineer, i.e. sugar shaker or caster, every facet of the piece, inside, outside, and underside, shows dense hammering that has a chiseled character to it.

It was made by Redlich & Co., New York City, whose "animal head mark," the word "Sterling," and model number "7470" are stamped on the underside.

The design is reminiscent of San Francisco's Shreve & Co.'s Fourteenth Century pattern issued in 1912, about the same date as this, and a time when this armored look was popular.

Indeed, while this has a traditional urn shaped body that sits on a tiered base, there is a band of strapwork around the shoulders that lends it a medieval character.

The cap has a sleeve fitting, a bullet finial, and is pierced in a pattern that includes fleurs-de-lis.

Never monogrammed or inscribed, this is in flawless condition. It is free of bends, dents, nicks, or scratches, sits evenly, and the base is without creases. The cap fits snugly and the finish is bright and even.

Note: see Old Friends item 4195f for Redlich muffineer model number C9095A.
