This substantially sized, 10" long, weighty at 2.8 T. oz., piece has a double Philadelphia provenance in that it is marked "lion, K, crown" for maker Peter L. Krider, along with the name of retailer "Robbins, Clark, & Biddle." It is also stamped "Sterling."
These four, Krider, Robbins, Clark and Biddle, were all well-known and well-regarded names associated with the manufacturing and marketing of silver, and they had intertwining histories. This particular configuration suggests an 1875-78 date for this piece.
The style is consistent with Philadelphia design of the period.
The handle is Old English with a rounded end and Tipt backside.
The front is extensively engraved in a bright cut pattern with wriggle work detailing and includes a central reserve area that is engraved with an exceptionally handsome "MHT" high Victorian monogram. The handle backside is plain save for the marks.
The bowl is large at 4 1/2" long by 2 7/8" at the widest. It is plum-shaped with a central vee, comes to an upswept, pointed tip, and has notched and flanged shoulders. The interior is engraved in a manner similar in style to the handle.
In excellent condition, the form is flawless, free of bends, dents, nicks, or dings, and it shows a bright finish. There is slight softening from polishing of the engraving detail.
