This 8 1/8" long, 1.77 T. oz., coin silver piece stands apart for several reasons.

One distinguishing aspect is the combination of maker and retailer.

It is stamped with the "eagle, thistle, harp" mark of Philadelphia's Taylor & Lawrie." Catherine Hollan in Philadelphia Silver notes "they [T&L] advertised they had manufactured for Bailey & Kitchen then for Bailey & Co. for twenty years . . . (1857 adv)."

This is stamped "M.W. Galt & Bro.," for the Washington, D.C. firm established by the sons of James Galt upon his death in 1847 (Rainwater Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers, which suggests that by the circa 1860 date of this, Taylor & Lawrie was fully established as a manufacturer with a wide market area.

This in the form of a sugar sifter, but the scale suggests it may be an early pea or ice spoon. Thought varies on this attribution, however.

The pattern is individualistic as well. The handle is a Fiddle shape with beveled edges and high, rounded fins off the bowl.

It has a Tipt end with a Thread detail below this, although it is not fully a Fiddle Thread aka French Thread design.

There is a handsome, feathered script, "MEF" monogram engraved sideways on the handle front.

The bowl is shell form, with a scalloped edge and pierced interior. It is round, 2 3/8" in diameter and 5/8" deep.

This is in superb condition, without wear or damage and showing a bright, even, finish.
