This solid silver bowls stands 3" high on a rimmed base that is 3 1/4" across, has a top diameter of 7 1/4", and weighs a substantial 14.18 T. oz.

It is marked on the underside with the "hammer over Stone" emblem of Arthur Stone, "Sterling," and "G" for benchman Herman Glendenning, who was with Stone from 1920 to 1936.

Glendenning seems to have been a major presence in the Stone studio. He is referenced numerous times in Elenita Chickering's foundational volume Arthur J. Stone 1847-1938 Designer and Silversmith.

Quoting Charlotte Bone, Chickering writes, "since [Glendenning] was an exceptionally rapid worker on hollowware, that became his forté in the shop."

Chickering also references the regard with which Glendenning held Stone. She writes, "The recollections of Herman Glendenning, one of Stone's Master Craftsmen, also underling the feelings of affection and admiration that Stone engendered in all who knew him."

Presumably the sentiment was reflexive and that Stone esteemed Glendenning who met and maintained Stone's standard.

The form of this particular bowl is illustrated in the catalogue section of Chickering's work, save that one is in a slightly larger size and with an inscription below the rim. The side note indicates, "Stone made this popular form, known as a 'Revere' bowl, in a variety of sizes."

To be sure, Stone's "Revere bowl" is distinctly different from the standard production items generated in quantity by 20th century industrial manufacturers and given this name.

This has a slightly splayed top with an applied rim on the exterior, as opposed to a plain edge. The entire body inside and out shows the subtle hammering marks of the crafter, i.e. Glendenning, and there is a brilliant, mirror-like, even, finish that only attentive, precise, polishing can bestow.

In sum, in the particular and in the entirety, this reflects and bespeaks the fine design, quality, and finish that is singular to hand formed items rendered by master craftsmen.

Never inscribed or monogrammed, this remains is outstanding estate condition. It is free of dents, nicks, or burrs, and has a rich finish showing only incidental light surface scratches consistent with age.
