Introduced in 1889, Coligni stands alongside other enduring Gorham patterns such as Versailles, St. Cloud, and Cluny that originated at the hand of renowned designer Antoine Heller.

Heller was a classicist much of whose work reflects the Beaux Arts style. This mode is very much evident in Coligni which is a multi-motif line that incorporates draped, romantic figures arrayed amid opulent background imagery.

This example is a very large, 9 5/8" long, 4.6 T. oz., serving spoon.

The heavy and plain bowl has a narrow flange edge and is unusually large. It could be used for anything from casseroles to rice. It measures 4" by 2 3/4" at the widest, and is finished with a deep, matte, gold wash front and back sides.

In flawless condition, this is without any wear or damage. It appears to have been little to never used.

Marks on the bowl heel back are Gorham's "lion, anchor, G" emblem, "Sterling," and "Copyrighted '89," the year after kindred pattern Versailles was introduced, along with "B B & B Co.," for Philadelphia's Bailey, Banks & Biddle, on the handle reverse.
