Larger than most such pieces, this fish slice measures 12 1/8" long and weighs a substantial 3.7 T. oz.

The pattern is Lady Washington, which was one of Gorham's early lines, dating from 1876, the year of the American Centennial. That anniversary may have occasioned the development of the design given the name is associated with the first family of the then new nation.

The pattern features the profile of a courtly looking female figure set against a background of classical imagery that includes swags, garlands, cornucopia, and bellflowers on a stippled surface.

The handle reverse is largely plain, but repeats a bit of the primary motif at the end, and includes a handsome, period, engraved "MW" monogram.

The large blade, 7" by 3" at the widest, is singular among Gorham examples. It has a cupped heel with a fluted surface. The upper edge is raised and has a flange rim. The surface has radiating raised ribs, and is delicately engraved with subjects that mirror those on the handle design.

In excellent condition, this shows scant signs of use, with the highest points of the pattern showing only the slightest softening from polishing. The blade is without bends, nicks or burrs. The overall finish is bright and even.

Marks are Gorham's "lion, anchor, G" emblem, "Sterling," "Pat. Appl. For," and "Gorham & Co." This last identifier may indicate the piece was retailed at Gorham's New York City store, while the "Pat. Appl. For" suggests this is an early production item.
