The first full line flatware pattern produced by Rogers, Lunt, & Bollen, later simply Lunt, Dorothy Q was carried forward from antecedent firm "A.F. Towle & Son Co." which introduced it in 1883.

This example is a 6" long, .77 T. oz., early production sugar spoon, marked with the R L & B three part emblem and the word "Sterling."

The handle is Old English in style with a plain Tipt backside and a front that is extensively and engagingly engraved in a star shaped flower (perhaps clematis) and leaf design around a reserve, which in this instance was never monogrammed.

The leafy detail continues into the pear-shaped bowl which is highly reminiscent of the form used on Gorham's Strasbourg, introduced more than a decade after this. It has a flange rim with scrolling on the shoulders.

A rarely found pattern, this remains in mint condition, and is without wear or damage. The engraving remains crisp, the bowl is free of dents, bends, or burrs, and the finish is bright and even.

Note: the Massachusetts Historical Society website offers informative commentary and a good read on Dorothy Q[unicy], whose portrait it possesses, and the poem of this title penned by her great grandson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, in 1871.
