A specialty, limited production, piece, this 6 1/4" long, very heavy at 1.32 T. oz., spoon shows exceptional crafting.

It was made by Towle, whose "T in a standing lion" emblem and the word "Sterling" is imprinted on the handle backside.

Rendered in an Arts & Crafts manner, it has a reticulated handle portraying something of a Chippendale design.

No doubt made to demonstrate that Towle, located in Newburyport, Massachusetts, had the capacity to produce items equivalent in caliber to the contemporaneous, i.e. early 20th century, work of such A&C makers as Arthur Stone in Gardner, Massachusetts, and members of the Handicraft Shop in Boston, it comports well against these comparisons.

The thickness of the silver, handle and bowl both, is striking, as is the weight, while the overall finish is bright to the eye and smooth to the touch.

The handle is engraved "Mary" in script on the front, and "1910" on the backside, which details, along with the size of the piece, indicate it is a youth spoon.

Its fine condition suggests it was little used. There is no visible wear or damage, the bowl is flawless, without dents, nicks, or tip wear, and the finish is brilliant.
