Stephen Adams I was a well-recognized London silversmith of his period, roughly the full span of the second half of the 18th century.

Grimwade's foundational London Silversmiths notes his parentage is undiscovered, but that he entered his first mark with William Jury c. 1758, with another mark for both 29 October 1759. Although he also registered marks as a buckle maker, Grimwade states "it is clear that he was principally a spoonmaker."

This 8 3/8" long, 1.86 T. oz., table or serving spoon is fully marked for Adams I, i.e. "S·A," "sterling," "London," and a "1774-75" date.

It is Hanoverian in style, meaning it has an unturned, rounded Tipt end and an "extended drop," modified from a "rattail," on the heel of the bowl reverse.

The join with the bowl on the front is seamless and smooth.

There is a block letter "S + S" on the upper handle back.

This is in exceptionally fine condition, with no damage and minimal signs of use. The bowl remains well-shaped and free of dents, nicks, or bends, and the overall finish shows a soft patina.

Note: Old Friends has an extensive inventory of English, along with some Irish and Scottish. flatware. Please inquire.
