Measuring 7 3/4" long overall, with a 2 1/4" diameter by 1" deep bowl, and weighing 2.06 T. oz., this is a generously proportioned, solid silver, gravy ladle.

The pattern is Union, made by John Wendt, and in this case retailed by "Starr & Marcus," New York, as stamped on the handle backside, along with "Sterling" and "Patent."

Introduced in 1862, Union is a period design that is similar enough to Gibney by F.H. Gibney, later Whiting, and also dating 1862, that the two patterns could be confused.

The threaded edge handle has a central leaf rosette and leaf tipped, oval end, while there is an anthemion drop on the heel backside, all elements that echo the Greek Revival sensibilities popular at the time.

There is a finely engraved "TCW" script monogram set sideways on the handle front.

The bowl is an early form, deep, "helmet" shape with a raised central vee running from the handle to the bottom center.

This is in outstanding condition, absent polishing wear, bends, dents, or nicks, and it has a brilliant, mirror-like, hand polished only, finish.
