This 5 7/8" long, .48 T. oz., teaspoon is marked "H. Hastings" with an "eagle."

While most sources place H. Hastings in Cleveland, Ohio, circa 1820, William McGrew in Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin Silver introduces the possibility of a Connecticut location.

He labels this particular "eagle" as "a frustrating mark because so many of the retailer names are unidentified," but questions whether Hastings could have been located in Hartford, Connecticut, given other instances wherein this "eagle" appears on silver from that area.

It is possible, that, as with so much silver of this period, it was made in one location and sold in another, or Hastings could have been in both Hartford and Cleveland at different times. The particulars of this are the sort of curious academic question that attaches to old artifacts.

The piece has a boldly Tipt handle, with rounded fins off the bowl, a plain drop on the back, and a pointed bowl.

There is a somewhat primitive, but elegant, feathered script "A W" monogram engraved sideways on the handle front.

Offered as an interesting and appealing period and regional coin silver, it is in very fine condition, absent polishing wear, free of bends, dents, or nicks, and it shows a warm patina.

Note: Old Friends has a large inventory of coin silver, with a concentration in regional New England makers and retailers. Please inquire with specific interests.
