Rare Louis Vuitton Doll in Regional Costume

Extremely Rare Poupee (doll) from the Louis Vuitton Toy Shop. Made from a type of plastic (possibly celluloid) with delicate hand painted features, dressed in a detailed regional costume of Bretagne (Brittany). The costume appears to be of a style found in the area around Pont Aven. The face of the doll is of a mature woman not a child. The dolls wig appears to be of human hair and is in a pulled back style. The headdress is of stiffened lace, as is the wide collar of the dress. The dress itself is of midnight blue velvet trimmed in gold threads and multi-color embroidery. It also has an embroidered fabric inset at the lower third of dress at the hem. The same fabric is used as part of the sleeves from the elbow to the wrist, the sleeves end in ruffles of stiffened lace. The apron over the dress is constructed of a light blue-green floral brocade which is trimmed in dark blue thread and gold thread, and again edged in stiffened lace, all tied up with a silk ribbon in a matching color to the brocade. She also wears an under skirt of finely woven linen trimmed in lace. There is so much fine detail and finishing work in this costume! Condition is excellent and all original. Doll stands 14 inches (22 cm) tall and her Louis Vuitton label is sewn onto the dress at the inside seam . Circa 1930's
