Eric Tobin - Winter Birches, oil on canvas, 2005, signed in lower right and titled on the reverse. Size: 30 inches x 36 inches. Eric Tobin is a contemporary Vermont landscape artist. He resides in the northern part of the state in Johnson, VT. Tobin was greatly influenced by the Vermont landscape painter, Thomas Curtin, whom Tobin knew from his childhood and from whom he received his first set of paints. Tobin painted exclusively 'en plain air', or outdoors while actually viewing his scene. Tobin is largely self-taught but did receive one-on-one instruction from Fred M. Hines, a marine artist in Maine who later moved to Johnson, VT.
This painting depicts yellow birches in winter in the environs of Johnson, Vermont, with wonderful texture and hi-lighting of the tree trunks and an intricate pattern of shadows cast on the surrounding snow.
