This medium sized, open bowl has a top diameter of 6 5/8", sits on a flat base that is 3 1/2" across, stands 2 1/2" high, and weighs 10.8 T. oz. It carries the mark for Karl F. Leinonen who was the head smith in Boston's "Handicraft Shop" founded in 1901. He later established his own operation and in the course of things became a prominent name in the American A&C movement. Other marks include the model number "18" and the word "Sterling."

Stamped with the date symbol for 1891, the Gorham lion, anchor, G, the word "Sterling," and the number "25," this large open salt stands 1 3/4" high, measures 2 5/8" across, and weighs a substantial 2.2 T. oz.

The design is Aesthetic in nature, with a repeating cascade of what appear to be breaking waves encircling the convex body. Listed in the Tompkins "Handbook of Gorham Open Salt Dishes" with a date of 1885, model number "2155" is a flat bottomed, relatively large item.

Each of these examples measures 2 3/8" across, stands 7/8" high, and weighs approximately 1.0 T. oz. They have scrolled edges, rippled ("pie crust") rims, and gold washed interiors, although that is largely polished away in one of these.

There are no monograms, inscriptions, or removals.

Of exceptionally large scale, this 11 1/2" diameter, heavy, 20.9 T. oz., charger or service plate was made by Reed & Barton. It is item number "90" as indicated on the brushed finish underside, which appears alongside the R&B emblem and the word "Sterling." The bottom is also inscribed in script, "Anne and Sam, from, Auntie Mamie, October 7, 1916," giving it a precise date. It has a plain, flat, mirror finish center and 2 1/4" wide encircling rim. This pattern, known as "berry in calyx", is among Stone's best designs. A nearly identical though not quite so desirable piece is held by Yale University Art Gallery, see Chickering p. 147, plate 134. Similar examples may also be seen in the collection of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, and the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Each one measures 1" high, has a base diameter of 1 1/2", a top diameter of 3", and weighs approximately 1.1 T. oz, a little over 2.2 T. oz. together. There is a wide, 3/4", rim encircling the relatively deep, gold washed bowls and this has a formed surface that is no doubt inspired by the Aesthetic taste. This sterling silver mug has triple provenance. It is inscribed in script on the sidewall "Virgil C. Gibney, 1885" and on the bottom, "From Charles P. Murray," providing two references therein as well as a date. It also bears the maker's name "Geo. C. Shreve" and location, "San Francisco," and the Shreve bee emblem, for a third reference.
