A Providence, Rhode Island guild level retailer founded in the mid 19th century with principals related by marriage to the Gorham family, Tilden-Thurber Company was throughout its history a source of high quality silver offerings.

Such is represented in this 7" diameter, 1 1/8" high, very heavy at 11.4 T. oz., open bowl. It is stamped on the underside "Tilden-Thurber," "Sterling," and "943," and likely dates from early in the 20th century.

A dramatic example of Modernist design, Gorham's "No. 791" tea set, commonly identified as "Hibiscus," seems to take its inspiration from early 20th century Danish style as especially associated with Georg Jensen.

Offered as a three piece set, this is the pot. It stands 6" tall to the top of the finial, has a main body that is 4" at the widest, 5" to the end of the spout, and has a sterling and ebonized wood handle that extends 4 1/4" at a slight upward cant from the body. Marked "S" and with the model number "520," this 1 3/4" diameter, 15/16" high, relatively solid weight at nearly 1.0 T. oz., sterling napkin ring may have been made by New York's Wood & Hughes who is thought to have used this marking convention.

Dating about 1875 or so, it shows sophisticated decoration. The heavy rimmed edges are bordered by knurled bands that are nearly 1/8" wide.
