Measuring 5 3/8" wide, standing 1" high, and weighing 2.5 T. oz., this sterling silver piece is item number "121" made by Gorham, as indicated by the marks on the underside.

It is highly decorative, portraying in a naturalistic manner slanted toward Art Nouveau, a variety of fruit arrayed on the undulating rim. This sugar caster or muffineer stands 6 7/8" high, has a base diameter of 2 3/8", and weighs a generous 5.1 T. oz. It was made by Watson and is stamped with that company's crown, w, lion hallmark on the underside, along with the words "Sterling Silver," the model number "M20," and the single number "8." length across handles twelve inches, width six inches, height six inches, weight 27.13 Troy ounces, fine condition, monogrammed as shown.

Whiting could easily have incorporated the rocaille design into the dies which were used to strike the body of this piece. Instead, they chose to use applied decoration along the foot and below the lid, a more difficult and costly technique. The resulting three-dimensionality lifts this tureen out of the realm of "good" and into that of "exceptional".

Engraving on side of bowl is a 2-1/8" circle containing a horse's head and an inscription around it, "PERCHERON SOCIETY OF AMERICA CHICAGO". Engraved on the bottom is: "CHAMPION TROPHY/OFFERED BY/THE PERCHERON SOCIETY OF AMERICA/FIVE STALLIONS OWNED BY EXHIBITOR/OREGON STATE FAIR/SALEM-OREGON 1915" and then the names of the horses and of the recipient.
