Offered is a nice American coin silver teaspoon in the fiddle pattern by noted Philadelphia silversmith Edward Lownes (1792-1834), and bearing one of his more attractive and uncommon maker's marks. A weighty item at 1.0 T. oz., this 5 7/8" long teaspoon is a superb example of Wallace's figural "Irian" pattern.

It portrays a full-sized, semi-draped, female image with three putti surrounding her head. One of these is cupid like and is pointing a bow and arrow at her.

Additional detailing includes orchid blossoms, leaves and other flowers, front and back sides, all presented in an Art Nouveau manner, which is consistent with the 1902 date of this line.

Measuring 7" long and weighing not quite 1.0 T. oz., this preserve or jelly spoon traces to Boston, circa 1860.

It is stamped ". F&H ." for Farrington & Hunnewell, along with "Pure-Coin," which is a New England regional term designating the silver content.

with short back midrid (a/k/a reverse fiddle tip't), pointed chamfered shoulders and a pronounced "flat" at leading edge, length 9 inches, weight 2.23 Troy ounces, monogrammed as shown. There is a small imperfection on back of bowl (see third photo) but otherwise fine condition.

We often speak of the "hallmarks" on American silver, but it is worth noting that very few pieces are actually hallmarked. This one bears the Baltimore assay office stamps commonly associated with 1824.

A replica of a style that has its origins in the pre-Georgian era (see Old Friends item 2971f), this pair of sugar nips carry hallmarks in two places for London, sterling silver, 1921, and maker HF, likely Harrison Fisher, which was a Sheffield based firm.

Measuring 7 1/8" long and weighing approximately 1.0 T. oz., this spoon has a broad, "Fiddle Tipt," handle, and high, pointed shoulders off the bowl.

It is stamped "S. Kirk & Son" along with the Baltimore standard mark "10.15," which is roughly equivalent to coin, and in this particular combination of marks was used 1846-61.

Well-proportioned and clean looking, this presents in a quietly stately manner.
