Gorham Medallion Small Sterling Sugar Sifter

Measuring 6" long and of good weight, 1.4 T. oz., this sterling silver sugar sifter is the smaller of two sizes that Gorham made in its 1860's Medallion line.

It has a 2" round bowl with a scalloped edge and coffered sides, and both the front and back sides retain a goodly portion of their original gold wash.

The classical female figure remains sharply defined and crisp, having been spared polishing wear. The backside is plain and absent a monogram or removal.

Pinched-waist fiddle handle, pointed shoulders, script mono on front; 8-1/8" in length. Condition is fine. Mitchell is not listed in any of the books dedicated to Missouri silver. However, the 1860 census lists George Mitchell, age 41, as a jeweller, with a wife and 2 sons. Further, spoons have been collected which show both Mitchell's mark and his home town of Hannibal. Probably by this time, Sam Clemens would have moved east.

The design on these two, matched spoons is commonly referred as Lily, Lily of the Valley, and Number 88 (which usually appears on the backside of this 1870 design). They are 7 1/8" long, weighty, and have the same "MHO" period monogram on the reverses. The pattern is intricate and has open work on the top of the handle. It seems to reflect similar design inspiration as Gorham's Egyptian Revival Lotus of the same period. The stylized shell-shaped bowls have a frosted finish on the interior,... Click for details
