By Ralph Grimm, veteran of World War I who lost both legs in the war and learned silversmithing at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC after the war. In 1825, the Erie Canal opened, sending to NYC and beyond the agricultural riches of Ohio and ultimately the entire midwest. For 10 years -- from 1825-35 -- this cornucopia was celebrated in the arts, including the art of silvermaking. The basket-of-flowers and sheaf-of-wheat flatware patterns are examples; so too is this mug with its band of farm produce and equipment -- corn-filled wagon, barn, windmill, beehives, farm house, corn crib, scythe, rake, and a sheaf-of-wheat design repeated 10... Place pieces are much rarer than servers in this grand old Durgin pattern whose name is a subject of some disagreement, which leads me to believe that not many were produced.

Leveridge was part of a prominent New York family, many of whom were attorneys. His grandfather John William Chase Leveridge (please see fourth photo) served in the war of 1812, and upon his death in 1886 was the oldest living lawyer in the city. According to the New York Times' obituary, "he retained the full use of his faculties up to the time of his death," an accomplishment to which we all... Click for details

with high relief cast bust of Van Dyck, length 9 inches, weight 3.24 Troy ounces, no monogram. Truly one of Antoine Heller's greatest designs, and among Gorham's most sculptural patterns.

There is a file cut (visible from side and reverse only; see fourth photo) which we've pictured in excruciating detail, and some light pitting on the blade which we've mostly polished out and probably will address a bit more, as time allows. Aside from this, the condition is excellent.
