length 8 inches, total Troy weight 10.49 ounces, monogrammed "B.B." (script, obverse). These have seen some hefty use by hungry hands. There is a bit of wear where they meet the plate, some of which encroaches upon the engraving. That said, they do still have a certain charm, excellent diaper work and scrolled decoration, and a wonderful feel in the hand. Marked "patent 1855 / coin" (mark is worn).

circa 1840. Tipt double swell fiddle handle, no monogram, length 7 1/4 inches, weight .87 oz. Troy, good condition. For those who collect VT silver, finding the town mark (please see third enlargement) along with the maker is an unexpected pleasure.

Roswell Hopkins Bailey was born in Unity, NH on July 22, 1804. At or near the time this spoon was made, he served as master to two apprentices: first Samuel Philbrick Bailey, then Bradbury Melon Bailey...

with decorative bright cut engraving, length 5 3/8 inches, total Troy weight 2.64 ounces, monogrammed as shown in third enlargement. My apologies for only picturing one here, but they are all identical.

These are benchmark examples, looking today just as they did upon leaving the factory on Elmwood Avenue some hundred and fifty years ago. They are engraved (slightly differently) in an exceptionally well designed and well executed manner upon all three sides...

length 5 5/8+ inches, weight 3.67 Troy ounces, superb original condition, gilt bowls, engraved (reverse) 1883 as shown in enlargements.

Those folks who Replace your stuff have given this pattern the prosaic name of "WHS9", but we don't believe them for a minute. Engraved patterns such as this, if they had a name, were often known by number, for example "Antique Engraved number 7." They involved hours of skilled, exacting work by craftsmen who were paid more than most of their peers...

with heart shaped cut out in tines, length 6 1/8 inches, total Troy weight 7.08 ounces, fine condition, monogrammed "H" as shown in third enlargement. These are scarce.

length 5 3/8 inches, gilt bowl, immaculate original condition, weight .8 oz Troy, engraved "Beall" as shown in second enlargement.

length 12 inches, weight 3.16 Troy ounces, fine condition with minor scratches on reverse of blade as seen in second enlargement. There is some slight evidence of an erasure, but if so it has been done properly and even the best trained pair of eyes may not be able to detect this.

The blade features an exciting combination of bright cut, diapering and wriggle-work engraving which delights both the eye and the camera's lens...

length 7 1/4 inches, weight 1.38 oz. Troy, no monogram, some scratches on blade as shown (we've exaggerated them, here) in third enlargement but fine overall condition.

spoons, length 5 3/4 inches, Total Troy weight 4.6 ounces, excellent original condition, crested and monogrammed as shown in first enlargement, with half-matte engraved bowls, marked with retailer's mark only and "sterling"; see photo number four.

This pattern gets much less love than its close relatives Iris and New Art, but is every bit as finely detailed and well executed as either one of those.

length 4 5/8 inches, total Troy weight 2.1 ounces (on the heavy side for berry forks), excellent original condition, gilt tines, monogrammed as shown in second enlargement.

These are truly a choice find!

length 7 1/4 inches, weight 2.33 Troy ounces, no monogram, excellent condition.

An underrated manufacturer, Watson had exceptionally talented die sinkers who were capable of producing flatware with fine detail and high relief. This spoon showcases their talent perfectly.

length 12 1/4 inches, fine condition, weight 4.5 Troy ounces, with elaborately engraved matte finish gilt blade, monogrammed "M", marked only sterling. Turner (p. 127) labels this pattern "M2 Engraved."

Those of you with long memories will remember when Martha Stewart featured some of our "finds" in her article (Glints of Genius, pp 154-9, November 2008) about collecting bright cut silver. This item is of a higher quality than anything which is pictured there...

double swell fiddle with short front midrib decoration, length 10 3/4 inches, weight 3.88 oz. Troy, fine condition, monogrammed as shown in fourth enlargement.

Noteworthy for the whimsical and well executed decoration of Poseidon averting his eyes from the sullen stare of one sweaty stallion, and for the foliate scrolled embellishments on handle, which are stylistically "of a piece" with the blade.

height 7 7/8 inches, length 10 inches across the bobeches, diameter of base 4 inches, weight approximately 38.5 Troy ounces, no monogram, excellent condition.

Little is known about La Paglia himself, though Dorothy Rainwater relates (see Silver Magazine, May/June 1995, item pictured in article) that he worked as a spy during WWII, and was smuggled into and out of Italy on board a submarine...

For those of you who wonder what that unusual symbol between the Whiting trademark and "sterling" might mean, we suspect that is a letter h inside a circle, meaning 'heavy,' since these weigh a bit more than the average Lily butter spreader...

Albany circa 1820, length 6 7/8 inches, total Troy weight 14.03 ounces, monogrammed "MM" in period script with flourishes, looking pretty much the same way they did upon leaving Messrs Shepherd & Boyd's establishment just over two hundred years ago.

Finding a set of twelve coin silver dessert spoons in any pattern is rare, but I'm hard pressed to think of the last time we had the privilege to offer a group of this quality (note the "flat" at the tip of each spoon) and decorative appeal...
