Though the gilding was probably a bit brighter in 1902, this is still an especially impressive example. For those of you who are not familiar with weights, 5.9 Troy ounces will feel wonderfully heavy in the hand!

Whiting could easily have incorporated the rocaille design into the dies which were used to strike the body of this piece. Instead, they chose to use applied decoration along the foot and below the lid, a more difficult and costly technique. The resulting three-dimensionality lifts this tureen out of the realm of "good" and into that of "exceptional".

In 1894, Nellie Sontag would have been a household name. With her brother Sir Mohawk, she was half of the famed trotter team which held the fastest time for their age class. The horses were immortalized in a print by Currier & Ives of John Cameron's painting, which we show here in our fourth enlargement...
