What sets this item apart from other examples which have recently been on the market is, simply stated, condition. Not only are the floral decorations crisp and untouched by polishing wear, but their gentle background of chasing marks remains (see third photo), creating an effect of kumatage, as if the decorations were suspended in a pool of rippling water...

diameter 9 1/2 inches, weight 26.2 Troy ounces, craftsman [probably] David Carlson. There is a small divot along the rim which we've magnified twenty-fold so that it looks like a crater, but this is barely visible to the naked eye. There are also some salt spots on the interior, (see fifth photo) but the chasing is crisp and the overall condition is truly outstanding.

This is one of Stone's best designs, with similar examples held at Yale University Art Gallery and other major museums...

This pattern is among Stone's finest designs. A nearly identical though not quite so desirable piece is held by Yale University Art Gallery, see Chickering p. 147, plate 134. Similar examples may also be seen in the collection of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, and the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Chickering shows a fish knife in a similar pattern with notes that Stone was heavily influenced by Dresser's "The Art of Decorative Design (pl. XXVI)", which we have reproduced here in enlargement number five.

A lovely complement to any "Berry in Calyx" holloware, this fine piece by craftsman Charles W Blanchard is not a commonly encountered pattern.

Bored and in need of a new game? How about one that doesn't require a computer or, for that matter, electricity? Measuring 4 3/8 by 1 1/8 by 1 3/8 inches, this set will fit easily into your purse or briefcase, but at 31 oz. Troy (that's two pounds, two ounces in lay terms) it may weigh you down a bit. The case has some minor dents, as one might expect, from its occupants which are small and dense...

length 8 5/8 inches, weight 3.9 Troy ounces, monogrammed "B", outstanding original condition, marked "Shreve Crump & Low" with 925 in oval. Though not a "first demand" pattern, the Antique Ivies were made by several manufacturers, and involved extensive skill and hand work to produce. Expensive when first sold, they are members of a dying breed, as most flatware of this quality has now been consigned to the melting pot...

gilt pear shaped bowl, monogrammed "LC" (script, reverse), excellent condition, length 4 1/8 inches, marked only Bigelow Kennard and "sterling" but looks to be Wood & Hughes.

guilloché enamel box, three distinct patterns visible in the engine turned engraving depending on your angle of vision (see enlargements), double hidden integral hinges opening outward from the center, gilt interior, 3 1/4 by 2 1/8 by 3/8 inches. There is a minor flake in the enamel (see third photo) which doesn't extend through to the metal, and some scuffing around the edges on reverse but aside from this the condition is superb...

spoons, length 5 3/4 inches, Total Troy weight 4.6 ounces, excellent original condition, crested and monogrammed as shown in first enlargement, with half-matte engraved bowls, marked with retailer's mark only and "sterling"; see photo number four.

Boston circa 1926, with applied molded rim and gently slanting sides, height 3 1/2; top diameter 4 inches, weight 6.6 Troy ounces, no monogram, fine condition.

Also known as a mint julep cup, this form is not common among early 20th century hand wrought items made here in the U.S.

Danvers, MA circa 1930, height 3 1/4; top diameter 2 5/8 inches, weight 5.75 Troy ounces, no monogram, some very light scratches but excellent overall condition.

Though his work is ardently sought by collectors, Porter's output was not always of consistent quality. His soldering was occasionally sloppy, and his hammer marks were at times random. Here, the seams are nearly invisible, and the art peen hammering (please see third enlargement) is laid out masterfully along the vertical axis...
