Offered is an interesting early 19th Century American coin silver spoon, marked H&ADRIANCE for Hayes & Adriance (Poughkeepsie, NY), a partnership between Peter Perret Hayes and John Adriance from 1816 to 1826. This piece has a clear maker's mark and a period engraved script monogram. It measures about 5 13/16 inches in length and weighs about 12 grams. length 8 5/8 inches, total Troy weight 5.14 ounces, monogrammed as shown in bowl of spoon. The palm leaf gilding on reverse of fork is not quite so bold as on the spoon, and there is a slight blemish on the fork (see third enlargement) but the overall condition is fine.

Glendenning was by his own telling a street kid from Gardner who discovered Stone's workshop, became enthralled with the goings on there, and was taken in by the great master of American Arts & Crafts silver as an apprentice. The youngest of the original members, he is said to have claimed that "Stone made me a silversmith and made me a gentleman."

One factor which ultimately contributed to the demise of his firm was that George Shiebler's best designs were difficult to execute and costly to produce. Not many of these forks were made, and the surviving examples vary in quality and condition.

Offered is a very beat up American coin silver spoon by noted Hagerstown, Maryland silversmith and clockmaker Arthur Johnston, featuring one of at least three marks attributed to him. This spoon has a very clear maker's mark and also features a period engraves script monogram of "MC". This spoon measures about 5 5/8 inches in length, and weighs about 13 grams.
