Engraved patterns such as this, if they had a name, were often known by number, for example "Antique Engraved number 7." A charming and finely made piece of Victorian silver jewellery, the matte surface is inlaid with skilfully engraved gold and copper flowers. Length, 3 5/8 inches; excellent condition; marked only "PAT AP'D FOR", but probably produced by the Whiting Mfg. Company.

height 9 5/8 inches, smoothly ground pontil. As is often the case, the top rim has suffered some insults and been ground down a bit to hide them (please see second photo). Also, the stopper is alas a marriage and not a happy one. Nonetheless this is one handsome piece of glass.

Virginia circa 1810, length 5 3/4 inches, monogrammed "T" (??) in period script with flourishes, weight 2.51 oz. Troy the lot, light wear and some minor dents in bowls but superb color and very good overall condition. Clarico's work would appear to be scarce.

Providence circa 1790, downturned pointed end with slashed drop, length 8 3/4 inches, weight 1.84 oz. Troy, marked and monogrammed as shown in enlargements.

There are some faint lines in the bowl (see fourth photo), probably where a few dents were rolled out, but the overall condition of this spoon is exceptional, with little or no tip wear, a well-struck mark, and excellent weight.

Collecting early American silver does not have to be an overly expensive proposition, although you could also find similar spoons on ebay (item 274673082801) @195.00 each!

excellent condition, monogrammed "W" (see second photo), length 5 3/8 inches, weight 6.21 Troy ounces. These have an embossed decoration on the bowl which we suspect that later versions of this piece do not possess.

circa 1860, with hollow handle and finely engraved flat all silver blade; marked "R & W WILSON" in rectangle; length 11 1/2 inches; engraved "Woelpper" on reverse of blade, good condition although the edge is a bit rough (please see second enlargement).

with applied cat tail, bird and foliage. Although our picture fails to show it well, the bird and cat tail are red, the foliage gold. No doubt the next question out of your mouth will be, "Bruce, is this bi-color gold, or just copper and brass?" Alas I do not know and am not inclined to put a drop of acid on the item to find out. warriors and one fair handsome maiden all of whom hang from a very Shiebler-esque pin so you can get the "look" for half the price! 2 7/8 inches long, no monogram, excellent condition, please see second photo for mark.

looks rather like the work of Antonio Pineda but marked only Taxco 925 (see fourth photo), length 15 inches. Since it just barely fits the neck of Yours Truly, we'd hoped to have him as a model but when our photographer showed up he had run off to the wood shed, forcing us to use a stand-in.
