Catalog: Silver: Sterling: Flatware

Should you have the good fortune to be reading our web page sequentially, here are two twisted bits of silver in honor of April Fool's Day. These were made in different fashions by individual craftsmen operating a machine which could rotate their working stock in alternating directions, causing a "trompe l'oeil" effect. Length 5 7/8 inches, weight .70 oz. Troy, no monogram, some knife cuts on reverse of tines but otherwise in fine condition. Place pieces in this pattern are scarce.

engraved in bowl, whether it was a souvenir from that leafy suburb of Northampton or a gift to some long ago Florence we'll never know, length 7 1/8 inches, slight wear to crown (reverse) but fine overall condition, weight 1.68 oz Troy.

length 6 inches, monogrammed "RBK", excellent condition. In deference to those collectors who find it difficult to abide by someone else's initials, we've made these tantalizingly cheap...

length 8 1/2 inches, weight 2.55 Troy ounces, monogrammed as shown, fine condition.

Other pages on this internet show a scrawny 5 1/2 inch item which they're trying to pawn off as the nut spoon. We beg to differ. And if you'll allow me to indulge myself in some shameless salesmanship, I will state that pierced servers are eminently useful, and the pointed antique patterns fit in well with any others.

Length 5 inches, excellent condition, monogrammed "RL" (script, obverse), heavy. As we've no doubt mentioned in the past, Towle compensated for the austere nature of this pattern by designing some wonderfully decorative blades, tines and bowls for the serving pieces.

or large sugar shell, length 6 3/8 inches, weight 1.26 Troy ounces, fine condition, monogrammed "Jessie".

One by craftsman Alfred Wikstrom (has Stone Associates mark); the other by Charles W. Brown, length five inches, total Troy weight .94 oz. excellent condition, marked and monogrammed as shown.

A set of these same spoons graces the cover of Elenita Chickering's superb monograph about her Uncle, Mr. Stone.

a sugar sifter length 7 1/8 inches; weight 1.74 oz. Troy, and a scalloped engraved bowl preserve spoon length 9 inches; weight 2 Troy ounces. Both pieces are marked only "STERLING," (attributed to Wendt) have fully gilt matte finish bowls and are in immaculate condition. We do not recall having seen this pattern before.

length 7 5/8 inches, weight 1.37 Troy ounces (each), monogrammed as shown, fine condition, scarce.

length 6 1/4 inches, excellent condition, no monogram.

spoon, length 5 3/4 inches, excellent condition, no monogram. The T-monarch-S trademark (see second photo) is ringing only the faintest of bells in our memory, but Thomae silver company is also a possibility.

length just shy of 8 1/2 inches, monogrammed "S" obverse, exemplary condition.

length 9 3/4 inches, weight 4.17 Troy ounces, no monogram, some very light scratches on blade (ask me to give it a gentle buffing before shipping, if you'd like) but excellent overall condition.

This is a big, splashy looking server which will make a wonderful wedding gift for a couple with a solid sense of style.

An underrated manufacturer, Watson had exceptionally talented die sinkers who were capable of producing flatware with fine detail and high relief. This spoon showcases their talent perfectly.

length 6 inches, weight 1.08 Troy ounces, excellent condition, no monogram.

The hooked tine has a chamfered edge, which initially led me to believe that this was a pastry fork, and it would serve that purpose well.

length 9 7/8 inches, weight a zaftig (or, as the more genteel would say, "robust") 4.05 oz. Troy, one scratch on blade--see fifth photo-- which we'll attack with pumice before shipping but excellent overall condition, no monogram. A classic wedding gift, the bride or groom will remember you with fond gratitude whenever pie is served...
