round downturned ends with short back midrib decoration and raised arch drops, length 8 3/4 inches, weight 4.14 Troy ounces the pair, some very light wear to engraving but fine overall condition, marked as shown in fifth enlargement with Vernon's distinctive pseudo-hallmarks.

Collecting early American silver does not have to be an overly expensive proposition, although you could also find similar spoons on ebay (item 274673082801) @195.00 each!

circa 1860, with hollow handle and finely engraved flat all silver blade; marked "R & W WILSON" in rectangle; length 11 1/2 inches; engraved "Woelpper" on reverse of blade, good condition although the edge is a bit rough (please see second enlargement).

New York circa 1846, length 6 1/2 inches, weight 6.95 Troy ounces, marked as shown in fourth enlargement, monogrammed "Bailey" in period script, some tine and pattern wear but good overall condition.

Averaging 1.74 Troy ounces apiece, these are wonderfully heavy in the hand, and a pleasure to use.

Baltimore MD circa 1790, round downturned end with just a hint of a rear midrib extending 3 inches down the handle, unusual double arched drop, length 8 3/4 inches, some tip wear as shown but good overall condition, monogrammed "H" in period script. How certain are we of this attribution? Well, if it's American then the spoon is most certainly Dowig...

NY circa 1790, bright cut borders with oval cartouche, elongated bowls with raised oval drops, length 8 3/4 inches, weight 3.13 Troy ounces the pair, marked and monogrammed as shown in enlargements. There is some softening to the decoration, but the bowls are largely free of tip wear and both spoons are in very good overall condition...

length 5 7/8 inches, total Troy weight 4.24 ounces, fine condition, monogrammed "Bailey" in period script, marked "Bailey & Co" and "lion-s-shield" as shown in third enlargement.

One can't help but wonder if this wasn't the personal silver service of Joseph Trowbridge Bailey, or some member of his family.

Rand and Crane, length 11 5/8 inches, weight 3.98 oz. Troy, monogrammed "M" (obverse, old English), excellent condition with button on reverse. The shell appears to be applied rather than die-struck, but little else is remarkable about this spoon aside from the price, which we deem to be quite reasonable.

In what Donald Soeffing has lovingly labeled a "naive" pattern (see Medallion Silver, p. 95); 4 7/8 inches long; weight 2.13 Troy ounces, fine condition; no monogram; applied warrior's head in high relief surrounded by engraving; marked only "COIN 1".

These are far above average in terms of quality, condition, and design.

Edinburgh (1834), with highly carved shell-end grippers and squared shoulders, excellent original condition, exceptionally well struck marks, length 5 5/8 inches, weight 1.49 Troy ounces, monogrammed as shown in third enlargement.

A stunning and pristine example of the best Scottish craftmanship and design.

Albany circa 1790, rounded end with short back midrib and raised incised drop, monogrammed "P over L G" in period shaded block lettering, typical bright-cut and wriggle-work engraving, length 9 1/8 inches, weight 2.09 oz Troy.

There is a pinprick dent, visible mostly from the reverse, which we show in excruciating detail (see third enlargement); also an engraved inventory number, but aside from these issues the condition is very good.

in rectangle. Is this Joseph Carman? John Chalmers? Joseph Carpenter? Am I failing to Inspire Confidence? Truly, as with many initial marks, the answer may never be known. Length 5 7/8 inches, monogrammed "M" in period script, the bowls are a bit chewed up (see fourth photo) and there is some tip wear-- priced accordingly.

These are substantial and well made spoons, weighing in at 4.69 oz. Troy, the lot. The overall condition is excellent. Whether any of this lends them a premium over the silver value, or whether they'll be swallowed up by the smelter's gaping maw remains to be seen...

Baltimore circa 1860, length five inches, weight .52 Troy ounces, no monogram, excellent condition. Please see third photo for mark. Gilding appears to be original but there is no way to know this, for sure.

This pattern is not common in American silver of the 19th century.

Whitingham circa 1800, length 5 5/8 inches, total Troy weight .79 oz., very good condition, period script mono (obverse) and a slightly later one (reverse), marked as shown in third enlargement.

Notable as birthplace of Brigham Young, the town was a mere thirty years old when these spoons were made. We marvel a bit that such a small, rural spot could support its own silversmith, and can't help but suspect that he dabbled in other trades.

Boston and Salem Massachusetts circa 1800, length 9 1/8 inches, slight tip wear but heavy and in fine overall condition, monogrammed "H" (obverse, script with flourishes).

length 4 1/8 inches, upturned handle with front midrib and squared shoulders, as is so often the case with youth items the tines are a bit askew but otherwise in good condition, no monogram, unmarked.

Boston circa 1800, length 5 1/4 inches, weight .47 oz Troy, excellent condition, period script mono "MH", marked as shown in 3rd enlargement.

While it may be difficult to work up too much excitement over a mustard ladle, this one is especially long and well-constructed, with a shaft that chamfers as it meets the perfectly hemispherical bowl, and an ever so stylish gently tip't drop.
