Issued in 1910, Buckingham bears a strong resemblance to Gorham's companion and immensely successful Chantilly line that was introduced fifteen years earlier.

It could be argued the two patterns are variants of the same design, with the former incorporating English style detail and the latter French, as intimated by their respective names. Buckingham is also more robust, i.e. generally heavier weight, than Chantilly, and often has more elaborated serving ends.

Outstanding among the various Medallion patterns produced during the 1860s, Gorham's version was the one chosen by Tiffany & Co. to offer under its retail banner.

This factor may explain the reason why it was more often than not made to a sterling silver standard, which Tiffany required, versus the typical coin of the period.

This 5 7/8" long, .8 T. oz., sugar spoon mirrors this practice. It is marked with a "lion, anchor, G" emblem, "Pat. 1864," "Gorham & Co.," and "Sterling" on th...

This master butter knife is a lengthy at 7 7/8", and weighty at 1.61 T. oz., early example of Gorham's Old Medici marked with the company's "lion, anchor, G" emblem, "Sterling," and "Copyrighted" on the handle backside.

Old Medici is one of the many expressive patterns created by renowned Gorham designer Antoine Heller. It features a variety of figures and imagery drawn from the Italian Renaissance period.

Most references date this to 1880, although Charles Carpenter in hi...

Stamped "H&S" in two circles joined by a diamond for Syracuse, New York's Hotchkiss & Schreuder, this 8 3/4" long, 1.7 T. oz., berry spoon dates from the 1860s.

It is a fine representation of the design sensibilities and manufacturing skills of the period.

The stem is twisted while the scalloped edged handle end is flat with a slightly upturned tip. The surface of this has an engine turned background complimented with bright cutting and a wriggle work border on the backside.

An early example of a line issued in 1875, this 6" long, weighty at 1.5 T. oz., sauce ladle is marked "Pat. Appl. For," along with "Sterling" and Gorham's "lion, anchor, G" emblem.

The pattern, "Raphael," is Renaissance Revival in style, with a strongly Moorish influence.

Essentially non-figural, it does incorporate a bird with raised wings in the midpoint of the handle, just below the shield-shaped reserve area that is monogrammed "HWS" in Old English lettering.

The deep, oval bowl has...

A 7 1/2" long, just over 1.5 T. oz., preserve spoon, this piece was made by Wood & Hughes, New York City, whose "WwH" emblem is stamped on the handle reverse, along with "Sterling," and "Pat. 1878."

The pattern is "Venetian," which is a Moorish or Renaissance Revival design.

The plum-shaped bowl is relative large and elongated at 3" by 1 3/4" at the widest, by 1/2" deep. It has a central groove in the base, a flange rim, and a pale, satin matte, gold finish on the engraved interior, and ...

Established in 1867, Schohay & Ludwig (later Schohay, Ludwig & Co.) produced high quality silver, although as the company was short-lived, examples of their wares are not commonly found.

Located in Philadelphia, the firm's work followed after regional style typical of the period and that is the case with this 7 1/8" long, .9 T. oz., preserve spoon.

It has a flat, ovoid handle with a Tipt end that is joined to a twisted stem. This is engraved in a bright cut, line, and wriggle work l...

Price for the pair.
Matched items, each of these two master butter knives measures 6 1/4" long with the pair weighing 1.3 T. oz.

Marked "Coin," they are without a maker's identification. The style suggests an 1860s date and the work is clearly that of a capable (American) manufacturer.

They have twisted shanks leading to broad, flat, upturned handle ends that are extensively and finely bright cut engraved on the top sides. Each piece has a feathered script "AMF" monogram.

The blades are oriented at right an...

It has a generously proportioned, 2 1/2" long, 1 5/8" at the widest, 1/2" deep, shell form bowl with scalloped edges and a ribbed interior, all finished in a pale, satin matte, gold wash front and back sides.

The pattern, "Paris" by Gorham, on this lengthy at 7 7/8" long and substantial weight at 1.7 T. oz., master butter knife was issued at the turn of the 20th century and reflects the Beaux Arts design sensibilities of the time.

Intricate and detailed, the design is set in relief and incorporates putti, a seated woman, and leaf and fruit accents on both sides of the handle and the backside heel of the curved blade with a scalloped upper edge.

There is a script "A.T.A." monogram engraved on th...

Issued in 1880, Wood & Hughes' "Humboldt" pattern incorporates Moorish design elements, as popular in the period, laid out on an angular handle.

Produced at a time when the company was enjoying great prosperity and was especially productive, it exhibits sophisticated design and high quality execution. This is especially evident in the plum-shaped, notched edge, bowl that is intricately engraved and finished with a matte gold surface on the interior and bright gold on the exterior.

The Baltimore Museum of Art volume Maryland Silver indicates George Webb (1812-90) was a second generation silversmith, although he trained under Hugh Gelston rather than his father, James Webb.

This source also notes that he "conducted his highly successful jewelry and silver shop under the name Webb & Co. on Baltimore and Light Streets with W.H. Sexton as a partner 1877-86."

As this 9" long, 2.2 T. oz., serving spoon carries this mark, along with the word "Sterling," it can be def...

Likely dating 1855-1862, this sugar sifter measures 7" long and weighs 1.2 T. oz.

It was made and sold by Philadelphia's "Bailey & Co.," and is so marked, along with a "lion, S, shield" with additional "lion" pseudo hallmark that was used while George Sharp was the company's manufacturing manager 1852-c. 1862 (Catherine Hollan Philadelphia Silversmiths).

The "S" indicates sterling, while a like mark with a "U" indicates coin silver, with the former introduced in 1855 (Hollan).

Price per piece, two available.
This 7" long place or dessert spoon stands apart on several counts, the first of which is its exceptionally heavy weight at marginally over 2.0 T. oz.

Secondly, marked "Tiffany & Co.," it traces to the early years of the firm when it operated solely as a retailer.

In this case the maker was Henry Hebbard, whose three part "star, H, anchor" pseudo hallmark appears on the handle backside.

Thirdly, it is to a coin silver standard, so stamped, which is unusual for Tiffany which prompted, in...

Measuring 5 1/2" long and weighing just over .6 T. oz., this item has a 1 5/8" diameter, flat-bottomed, bowl with scalloped sides.

The pattern is "Angelo," which is a Renaissance Revival design patented in 1878, as indicated on the reverse. Other marks are "WwH" and "Sterling."

This is engraved "MEP" over "'90" in fancy, feathered script lettering on the handle backside.

The earliest of four Kings (I, II, III, and King George) patterns produced by Gorham, Kings I, introduced in 1876, is the most individualistic and least imitative of the four of the English counterparts from which this popular American design in many manifestations evolved.

A bright cut floral and leaf design dating circa 1880 rendered in an Aesthetic manner, the pattern on this 8 1/4" long, 1.4 T. oz. serving spoon appears to be Towle's No. 38 Engraved.

The lack of a maker's mark and an ovoid shaped bowl with a flanged rim and central raised vee not typically Towle in form, however, suggests it was made by some other contemporaneous producer.

Set on a rounded end Antique handle, the engraving is exceptionally well rendered, exhibiting bright, f...
