A.B. Griswold & Co, New Orleans, length 5 7/8 inches, monogrammed "ML" (reverse, script with flourishes). These are not in the best condition, with some dents and tip wear, but they did spend time in our great Crescent City... Please see second photo for mark.

in rectangle. Is this Joseph Carman? John Chalmers? Joseph Carpenter? Am I failing to Inspire Confidence? Truly, as with many initial marks, the answer may never be known. Length 5 7/8 inches, monogrammed "M" in period script, the bowls are a bit chewed up (see fourth photo) and there is some tip wear-- priced accordingly.

Newburyport, MA circa 1800, length 5 5/8 inches, weight 1.97 Troy ounces, unusual "sickle and sheaf" drops, fine condition, marked and monogrammed as shown in enlargements.

According to Flynt & Fales, Dole was an exceptionally meticulous spoon maker who was "known to be very exact in his habits, so much so that people set their clocks by his movements about town."

regional interest, Beggs & Smith, Cincinnati circa 1850, engraved "Irwin", some light wear but fine overall condition, length 5 3/8 inches. Did Irwin use this to embellish his hot dog, and if so was it a Kosher dog? Alas, we may never know...

with oak leaves and acorns, height and diameter both approximately 1 3/4 inches, weight 1.8 oz Troy, fine condition, marked only "S 620" but according to a Very knowledgeable fellow, the work of Wood and Hughes.

Elizabethtown NJ circa 1826, length 12 7/8 inches, weight 7.44 Troy ounces, excellent condition, monogrammed "MSM" in conjoined period script with flourishes (obverse) and "1801" (reverse), round downturned end with short back midrib, round chamfered shoulders and rounded drop. A fine, massive and well executed piece of silver with an exceptionally wide (4 3/8 inches), deep and capacious bowl. Voss attributes this mark to Darby, though Elias Davis, Jr...

length nine inches, weight 1.53 oz troy, monogrammed "R.A. Newhall" (script, obverse), excellent condition.

Prevear was a silversmith, watchmaker, and inventor. He was born in Northampton (1818) and apprenticed to Samuel Harrington of Amherst, who later became his partner. He married Olive Hanscome in Amherst (1843), and after her death married a second time (1856) to Elizabeth Pranker, an 1853 graduate of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, now Mt. Holyoke College...

maker Robert Osborne; Hamilton, Ontario circa 1855, length 5 1/8 inches, the monogram is just a tad worn but fine overall condition, please see third photo for close up of marks.

Providence circa 1790, downturned pointed end with slashed drop, length 8 3/4 inches, weight 1.84 oz. Troy, marked and monogrammed as shown in enlargements.

There are some faint lines in the bowl (see fourth photo), probably where a few dents were rolled out, but the overall condition of this spoon is exceptional, with little or no tip wear, a well-struck mark, and excellent weight.

Philadelphia circa 1790, with round downturned end and rounded drop, length 14 1/4 inches, weight 6.0 Troy ounces, monogrammed "RRC" (period script, obverse), with a scratch below these initials as shown and a few minor nicks in bowl but very good overall condition. In an attempt to distinguish this ladle from its peers, we'll mention that the bowl has a slight boat shape when viewed head on, as you may see in photo number four.

circa 1830,height 3 1/2; top diameter 3 1/4 inches, total Troy weight 13.47 ounces, some very minor dents but outstanding overall condition, monogrammed "AMC" in period script (please see fifth enlargement for mark and inscription.

With their band of cast applied grapes and elegant double molded rim, these are an outstanding example of the best American Empire era Philadelphia style...

Massachusetts circa 1790, length 6 1/8 inches, monogrammed MPH (?) in period script with flourishes, weight .42 oz Troy, excellent condition, please see third enlargement for mark.

Grant was a Colonel in the Revolutionary war, a shipowner, and a man of considerable wealth. His work is in the MFA and also at Old Deerfield.

New York circa 1825, length 12 1/2 inches, weight 4.52 Troy ounces, monogrammed "M" in period script with flourishes. There is a slight abrasion above the initial, and some very minor scratches in bowl as shown in enlargements three and four but the overall condition is outstanding.

Maltby Pelletreau was the second generation of this illustrious silversmithing family. His partnership with Bennett and Cook lasted only three years, so the date range for this item is pleasantly narrow...

Philadelphia circa 1795, with applied beaded border, square base, sunken center and handle offset to the corners, height 6 3/4 to top of spout; base 2 1/2 inches, weight 5.70 Troy ounces, monogrammed I * A on foot...

length nine inches, weight 2.44 Troy ounces, monogrammed "D" (obverse), outstanding original condition, retailed by A. Skinner. The blade features an aesthetically pleasing and exceptionally well executed combination of geometric and floral engraving.

Hughes, NY circa 1840, length 4 1/8 inches, monogrammed obverse in period script, a nearly imperceptible test mark at leading edge of bowl but otherwise superb condition, weight .51 oz Troy. An exemplary item.

length 9 3/8 inches, weight 4.85 Troy ounces, some very light scratches (which we'll substantially polish out before shipping) but excellent overall condition, monogrammed (M??) as shown.

A rare piece in this fine, old vineyard pattern.

Cornelia Anna Ritch (1847-1916) may well have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth. We know for sure that at the age of six, she had a fine looking coin silver cup in her hand.

Her great great great grandfather, Henry Ritch, was among the original settlers of Greenwich, CT, having received a grant of three acres there on May 19th, 1686...
