Most every culture has a version of, well, corn meal mush. In Italy, it's polenta. Among the Native American tribes of Florida, sofkee would be the name, and this spoon designed by Greenleaf and Crosby circa 1900 is supposedly a scale model of such a porridge-making utensil. The Watson Company of North Attleborough, MA made a wide-ranging series of high relief floral patterns in the early 1900's. Designed by Eustace Crees and Charles Court, they rank as some of the finest representations of nature in American silver flatware.

Bergen circa 1930, length 3 3/4 inches, total Troy weight 1.41 ounces, no monogram, immaculate original condition. For those of you who are not familiar with this mark, 830S = 83% silver.

These would make a splendid hostess gift, especially if your hostess happens to be of Scandinavian descent. Price is for the six.

Should you have the good fortune to be reading our web page sequentially, here are two twisted bits of silver in honor of April Fool's Day. These were made in different fashions by individual craftsmen operating a machine which could rotate their working stock in alternating directions, causing a "trompe l'oeil" effect. Length 5 7/8 inches, weight .70 oz. Troy, no monogram, some knife cuts on reverse of tines but otherwise in fine condition. Place pieces in this pattern are scarce.

length 5 1/2 inches, weight .64 oz Troy, excellent condition, no monogram, mark of Watson-Newell corporation. Aside from the obvious skill and detail with which the face was rendered, what lifts this spoon into the realm of above average is the applied wirework decoration, "Chicago..."

length 5 1/8 inches, weight .47 oz. Troy, monogrammed "M.F.W.", fine condition with traces of original gilding on bowl and along handle.

One of these days, a more scholarly colleague will reveal the true name of this pattern...

length 7 3/4 inches, three letter script monogram (reverse) as shown in enlargement number five, exceptionally fine condition, weight 1.36 oz. Troy, the blade well engraved with trailing bellflower decoration.

An American Beauty Rose orange (?) spoon 6 3/16 inches monogrammed "MMM" (front) and "Apr. 20 '06" (reverse). The birth month spoon pictured alongside has been sold.

length 3 3/4 inches, excellent condition, no monogram. Not antique but perhaps from the 1920's (see photo number two for mark) with better detail, die-depth and stronger oxidation than you'd find in a brand new one.
